Tuesday we got the approval from Ethiopia. We have been so excited since then. D has also filled out the contract with the homestudy agency. The contract/application wasn't anywhere near as intrusive as I assumed it would be.
There was another questionnaire that was required because we are adopting a child of another race. It's hard to understand how there can still be racism in this world. I have grown up and been friends with people of all races and nationalities. I can't imagine an environment where there is only one race. I personally enjoy the diversity... The questionnaire had some strange questions on it, such as 'Would your extended family be accepting of a black child?' I would disassociate myself from any family member who even seemed remotely concerned with the race of our child. Some of the other questions were slightly amusing; one in particular was concerning the care and styling of black hair. Luckily this was an easy one because my bi-racial niece, Pooh, has lived with us at different times and we have had to help with her hair. Overall, I was more concerned about the fact that such a questionnaire was even needed in today's world. Unfortunately, I have seen racism, and it is evil and ugly. I hope that I will be able to protect my children from it for as long as possible.
We have been prepping the house for several reasons, lately. We have been trying to get things ready for the home study, for D's parents to visit, D's brother and sister to visit, and for Pooh to come for the summer. We almost have Pooh's room ready, and I have been ordering some clothes off of EBay for her. I have been able to get some really good deals, but it is not as easy as it used to be. I now have to find the cool clothes with the bad pictures. A couple of years ago, the deals on EBay were so fantastic I very rarely bought something new. There are times now when the new things in the store are actually cheaper. I am hoping she will not need new socks and underwear again this year. With all the money that we are paying out for documents and agencies for our adoption, it's going to be a little tighter than normal this summer. Luckily there are so many free/cheap things to do here in PTC. Plus, Pooh is really excited because she is old enough to drive the golf cart around as long as D or I are in the front seat.
Today we bought the first actual gift for our new little daughter, whoever she may be. We were walking through Target trying to make sure that I have everything I need for my trip to Maine this week, when we passed a bunch of Shrek 3 toys. Sitting there was one of the cutest stuffed animals I have ever seen. It was a grey Dronkey (offspring of Donkey and Dragon from the other Shrek movies.) Dronkey is so stinking cute. We took it up to the counter and the cashier lady fawned over it like crazy and then couldn't ring it up. She sat there holding it while we waited for them to find the correct number to put into the cash register; I wanted to tell her to put it down. At one point it actually seemed like she wanted us to give up waiting for it. It was the last one and I am sure she would have bought it if we didn't. The Bean also had to have a Shrek toy, so she picked a cute Puss In Boots. She was a little jealous of Dronkey, but got over it quickly as soon as she realised it wasn't for me, but for her future little sister.
We are getting things ready for a block party tonight. This place is sooooooo social. Sometimes it's a little overwhelming for me as I tend to be shy. The Bean and D are loving it. They are uber social butterflies.
