The Girl Effect

I just was enlightened to this from Katy's blog.

Sometime in my mid-twenties (yes it took me that long) I began to realize that there were places in the world where women really were not looked upon the same as men. Yes I had read about, had heard it discussed, blah blah blah, but it never really hit home. It was difficult for me to see past what I thought were severe hardships growing up... to see that my life had actually been charmed if it were compared to millions of women and girls lives around the world.
So when I began to see (through different forms of media) the atrocities that are inflicted upon women, the unequal treatment, the downright objectification of so many women it was hard to get my mind around it.
Since our trip to Ethiopia to get our beautiful daughter, all of the things that I had previously thought I had gotten to understand about women and the progress that I thought was occurring went out of the window. As beautiful the spirit is of the Ethiopian people I found many things about the culture in the countryside very hard to digest. One of those things (the one that really bugged me) was the vast difference in the way women were treated compared to men. It's something that I think about all of the time. I met so many beautiful little girls that would so benefit from The Girl Effect. So many faces, so many hearts, so many beautiful young minds that could be so much more if given the opportunity.
Please watch, think, and give...

Watching my husband have a long conversation with my friend from middle class Addis about how she, an educated, modern, strong, beautiful woman, would never disrespect a man in Ethiopia by looking him in the eye while talking to him, was quite a trip.

It is so hard to imagine and understand all of the things going on RIGHT NOW. Most people live in their "little box" and do not see the real world beyond that. It is hard for the ones that do come face to face with reality to understand how any human could think in such a way, how children can be traded as wives for cattle, and women are viewed as unworthy. This video brings me to tears.
